Soldiers of Myfar

Description

Also a Dwarf of Baruklanndrar, a mountainous land to the North of Myfar ruled by a proud Dwarvish folk who are a combination of the Dwemer from Elder Scrolls, the Peter Jackson LOTR dwarves, and the Rankin&Bass LOTR Dwarven cultures. They're still in development.

The Men of Myfar however are the focus of these sketches.
Myfar is a country ruled by a dark (but not negroid) race of men in my fantasy setting of Aethon in the realm of Oold.
Myfar is at it's best a warm, damp, hilly, and covered in large rocky crags.
At it's worst it is cold, swampy, and foggy.
The Men who dwell in Myfar were once slaves to a race of serpentine creatures who dwelled in the far east, across the vast desert of Zalcaradun. They fled from their masters after a violent uprising and an even more brutal holocaust - retreating across the sands in search of a safe haven.
Legend tells that they followed a white phoenix to whom they gave the name Simurgh and who settled on a hill and burst into flame and ash. Here they built their capitol city, which to this day still stands in that position.
Their former masters of course followed them and made great attempts not to remaster their slaves, but to destroy them as an act of vengeance. The Myfarians, as they named themselves fought valiantly and crippled the forces of their ancient enemies - a great Owlbear appearing during the final battle to chase the reptile folk into the southern mountains, now named the Euryales.
The Land of Myfar was estabolished as a safe haven for all races with a dream of peace and the need for a home. Dwelling there now are the Men of Myfar, the Drayhelfay of doomed Drahan, the hulking Throak who were it's natural natives and who allowed the Myfarians to settle in their land, the orcish Ilhuinoth (translated as "Dogs of War") and a few others. There are also some small nations on the fringes of Myfar who look to the nation for protection. The Halfling ruled Sarafum is an example of one of these.
Most other human nations are more or less leery of Myfar, viewing it as a "foul land of wizards", which is a completely apt name due to the Society of Simurgh (mages guild of Oold) being based there and to the demographic of magically skilled individuals who live there.
The many feudal kingdoms of Arathin to the West are more used to Myfar than the barbaric Southern Men of Bernor are far enough away from them that there are very rarely ever dealings between the two of any sort. Myfar views Bernor as a land of terrible ice where warriors with horned helms battle one another for the luxury of bloodshed, and Bernor views Myfar as a land of vile sorcerers who steal the souls of their fellow men and make dealings with orcs and worse things.

Here you can see a Myfarian military mage (concept), a lightly armored scout/guard, and a heavily armored elite warrior all in their uniformed garb.
Myfarian culture is best described as a combination of Greek/Roman, Arabian, Jackson's version of Arnor from LOTR and these miniatures made by Reaper:

The Great Gray Owlbear is a sacred symbol in their culture (as is the white phoenix) and they tend to rely on short swords and war hammers, though of course there are exceptions inside and outside of military ranks.

This was done mostly as a record for how Myfarian armor looks.

Simurgh. poetic use of the name. I can see where the Arabian plays a role in this. though I would say that their traveling story reminds me of the Aztec search for the eagle eating the snake, but that's not a bad thing. I love how in-depth you are with this cultural stuff. it reminds me of how I am when I design alien species.
