Study on Drahan: chapter 1

Description

Today’s focus is on the Drahel, the people of Drahan. I did these a few months ago and must have forgotten to post them while my internet misery was going on, so here they are.

Drahan (which I will have to write an essay for some day) is a completely massive, utterly alien, VERY spiritual place that is incongruous but thinly related to the more ‘generic’ fantasy setting I have going, known as Oold. If I were to tell you *anything* about it, it would take at least seven pages in a microsoft word document. When I write about it, I end up writing very passionately and soulfully whether I mean to or not. That said; here’s some drahans.

The first is the second newest drahel concept, new varieties and ideas for races tribes and chapters constantly evolving within my brain. They are unnamed at the moment, and have no culture as of yet, and that is not to say that this is a note on their people for me to use in the future. They have almost no culture in their current stage of societal development. They are about as intelligent as cro magnon man, and have only just grasped the concept of tool use. They take up residence in an ancient, long disused and behemothic fortress city that once belonged to a now possibly extinct tribe of Drahel in the distant, half glimpsed past. They have a rudimentary spoken language and use cave paintings on the wall of their labyrinthine home as a written language. I have not yet decided whether their horns or antennae signify class or sects of culture/a hive structure, or if they are styled depending on how the Drahel itself likes it. They resemble pillbugs or earwig cyclopses, and their underbelly is covered in such a fluffy amount of plush fur fuzz that you could sink your hand completely into it for several inches before finding their neck, chest or stomach.

The SECOND race presented here are the Kallid. The Kallid are a reclusive tribe of ill repute, making their homes in the very farthest reaches of north or eastern Drahan. Not sure which yet, haven’t decided which way Drahan points, and I want to make my own compass system for them. They live in a very swampy area of the ‘snow forests’, a biome which is the equivalent of a rain forest, but with temperatures on the ground warm enough to melt the falling snow as soon as it touches any surface. They revere their creator god, Rakriss, who is a god of blood and sacrifice. They were his second attempt at creating his own tribe of Drahel, after the first one ended up as a species of horrifying god-monsters that resembled gigantic, bloated leeches bearing horrific psychic powers and insatiable hungers for death. HE considered it a triumph and a good deed, but no one else did, so he tried it again. Rakriss is evil in all respects, though he tries desperately not to be, always wanting to be redeemed as a puppy wants to play. He was created through the rape of a Drahel goddess by Yith-Golonak, The Sire of A Thousand Nightmares, the ‘devil figure’ of Drahelic culture, and has since delivered awful blights and terrors into the world without intending to do wrong.

The Kallid tribe Drahel are, without saying, very spiky - something that may contribute to their rather asexual way of life. Unlike most drahel societies, their’s do not revolve around sex or pleasure of the body, but rather battle, pain, and proving your worth to those around you. All drahel have strict spiritual guidelines unique to their people of course, and they (the kallid) are of no exception. There is no way to tell a male and female apart, for unlike most other varietys of Drahel they do not have breasts in copious amounts. Their color ranges from ivory cream white, subdued mint green, deep russet or wine purples, and other stately, royal looking colors. They like to adorn their bodies with gold ornaments (usually piercings or studs set in their thick scales) and rich cloths, often letting their garments drape over them, as very little needs to be covered in the name of bodily taboo. As a species, they feed almost exclusively on fresh blood, and cannot live long without ingesting it. Their culture revolves around the letting of blood, the drinking of blood, the taking of blood, of religious butchering, and other gorey traditions. (it has been changed so that they consume the single 'white blood cell' like organelle that travels through the Drahel water-stream, leaving their victims weakened and sickly.)

As ordained by Rakriss, however, they take GREAT pains not to be more cruel than is necessary. They treat their slaves well and outsiders better, and being heartless to another member of their tribe without provocation can bring great dishonor. Slavery exists in all drahel cultures (as does cannibalism), and it is one of the few things they will contact other tribes to trade for. When in battle, they use blunt weapons or weapons that will not kill. If they must kill, they try to do so painlessly, and without the spilling of blood.

Externally they appear strict, cold and unfeeling. These impressions are often not far from the mark, and it is rare to find comfort from one. They are a gentle race, but they are not always kind, and even to their allies they can be insensitive and callous.
